New Zealand trade jobs from the Gulf: six checks to make before you accept an offer
Tips · 2026-10-31 · 10 min read

New Zealand jobs from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Riyadh run through one route for most trade workers: an offer from an accredited employer, supported by an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). The offer, the employer's accreditation and your skills evidence are checked first; your papers from the Gulf come second. Get those in order and your application has a far cleaner start. This guide walks through each check in the order that saves time and money.
Who this is for
It is written for electricians, plumbers, fitters, welders, carpenters, machine operators and similar trade workers living anywhere in the Gulf region, of any nationality, who want a sponsored role in New Zealand. If you are also weighing Australia, our guide to Australia's Skills in Demand 482 visa sets the other route out in the same plain terms.

Jobs Abroad UAE lists accredited New Zealand employers hiring skilled overseas workers, and you can browse current roles on the jobs page. Nothing on this page promises an interview, an offer or a visa. Hiring decisions rest with employers and visa decisions with New Zealand.
What an AEWV job offer must contain
Before you spend on documents, hold the offer up against INZ's own rules. A genuine offer meets every line below.
Leading sites rather than working on them? See how construction managers are matched to Australian occupations for a sponsored move.
| Check | What INZ requires | What to ask the employer |
|---|---|---|
| Employer | Accredited by Immigration New Zealand | Their NZBN, so you can check the list yourself |
| Job check | An approved job check for the job | Whether it is approved yet or still being prepared |
| Hours | At least 30 hours of work a week | The weekly hours written in the agreement |
| Pay | At least the market rate for the job | The hourly rate and how overtime is paid |
| Your skills | 2 years or more of relevant experience, or a level 4 or higher qualification, in the same field | Which evidence they expect to see |
| English | Needed for skill level 3 to 5 jobs, with test results no more than 2 years old; not for skill level 1 or 2 | The skill level of the role |
The employment agreement cannot include unlawful deductions, a trial period or unacceptable bonding clauses. If a draft contract has any of them, raise it before you sign, not after.
Some jobs are excluded altogether, including planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops in horticulture or viticulture. Trade roles in construction, engineering and workshops are a different matter and sit comfortably inside the rules.
Check the accredited employer yourself
The single most useful ten minutes you will spend is on INZ's accredited employer list. Search by the 13-digit NZBN or by company or trading name. The list is updated daily, so a result today is a result worth trusting today.
A few employers have chosen not to appear in the search results. That is not a warning sign on its own, but it means you ask them directly and wait for a clear answer. The same care applies far from the Gulf: PinoyAbroad's guide to checking the accredited employer before you sign or pay makes a point that holds for any nationality.
New Zealand employers cannot charge you fees for a job or make you pay any of their recruitment costs, including indirectly through a third party. Our note on recruitment agency fees in the UAE covers the home-country side of the same principle.
Trade registration comes with the job, not after it
A visa lets you work for your employer; it does not license you for regulated trades. Overseas-trained electrical workers must apply to the Electrical Workers Registration Board for registration in the right class and hold a Limited Certificate before they can apply for a Practising Licence.

Plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers answer to the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board. Doing restricted work there without a current New Zealand licence is illegal, so ask a prospective employer how the licence step will be handled before you accept.
If you hold a diploma or trade certificate from outside New Zealand, NZQA's International Qualification Assessment compares it with New Zealand qualifications. NZQA says average waits are now 10 weeks, so start it early if your skills evidence rests on a qualification rather than years on the tools.
Your Gulf paperwork, step by step
- Define your trade in New Zealand terms and note the skill level of the role you want.
- Find roles with accredited employers, such as the Fitter / Turner and Welder role in Christchurch or the Heavy Excavator Operator role in Auckland, and check each employer on INZ's list.
- Prepare your CV with trade tickets and project dates. A tool such as Build AI CV can help you lay it out clearly in English.
- Interview, usually by video, and ask for the job check status in writing. A practice run on a mock interview is a calm way to rehearse trade questions in English.
- Collect skills evidence for the same field as the job: payslips, reference letters, certificates and, where relevant, an NZQA assessment.
- Wait for the employer to send you the link to the online application form.
- Only then book your medical and police certificates, and hold on to your current post until you have the offer and approvals in hand.
That last step matters. Resigning or ending a lease on the strength of a listing alone can leave you with no income and no visa. Our guide to fitting your UAE notice period around a visa grant shows how to time it.
Medicals, X-rays and police certificates
INZ requires AEWV applicants to be of good character and asks them to check whether police certificates are needed. Where one is, the UAE offers two routes: the Ministry of Interior Criminal Clearance Certificate, and the Dubai Police Police Clearance Certificate. Other Gulf countries have their own issuing bodies, so check the page for your country.
Medicals follow INZ's approved list. Applicants staying more than 6 months need a chest X-ray if they are citizens of, or spent more than 3 months in the last 5 years in, a country without a low incidence of tuberculosis, so read the INZ health requirements before assuming you do or do not need one. INZ names three panel physicians in the UAE (two Dubai London Clinic branches and New Medical Center ABD in Abu Dhabi) and five in Saudi Arabia. The Australian list is different, with four clinics in the UAE, so never reuse one for the other.
| Item | Cost or time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| AEWV application | From NZD $1540 | INZ shows 80% processed within 5.5 weeks |
| NZQA qualification assessment | Average wait 10 weeks | Start before the application if you need it |
| UAE Ministry of Interior certificate | AED 100 for use outside the UAE | Valid 30 days, and attestation by MOFA costs AED 300 |
| Dubai Police certificate | 5 working days | Valid 3 months from issue |
The short validity of the Ministry of Interior certificate is why it comes late in the sequence. Our guide to UAE police clearance from outside the UAE explains how to time it when you have already left.
Common mistakes
- Paying for an offer. INZ declines applications where money was offered or promised to the employer or its agent.
- Trusting a name without checking the NZBN on the accredited list.
- Assuming the visa covers regulated trade work. Registration is separate for electrical and plumbing roles.
- Ordering a 30-day police certificate months before it is asked for.
- Using the wrong country's panel physician list.
- Resigning before the offer, job check and approvals are confirmed.
Staying longer: time limits and the Green List
Total time on one or more AEWVs can be 5 years for most jobs, or 3 years if the job is ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5, after which the person normally spends 12 months in a row outside New Zealand. Many tradespeople therefore look at residence early. The Green List names roles New Zealand needs workers for: Tier 1 roles lead to a Straight to Residence Visa and Tier 2 roles to a Work to Residence Visa after 2 years of working in New Zealand. Our reading of the newest skilled migrant routes for experienced tradespeople follows what that means for hands-on roles, and the AEWV guide covers the visa in more depth.
From 9 March 2026 INZ's immigration median wage is NZD $35.00 an hour, and some settings, including exemptions for roles paid at least twice the median, still link to it. That is background rather than breaking news, but it is worth asking your employer which settings apply to your role. The wider picture of building work is in our piece on why the construction pipeline deserves a serious look.
For anything about your own eligibility, check the official AEWV page before you commit to a plan. If you want personal advice, use a licensed immigration adviser: in New Zealand it is a criminal offence for anyone else to give immigration advice unless exempt.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a New Zealand job offer from Dubai without moving first?
Yes, the AEWV is built for people with a job offer from an accredited employer, wherever they are based, and the employer sends you the link to the online application form. Interviews are commonly held by video. Do not pay anyone for an offer, because INZ will decline an application where money was offered or promised to the employer or its agent in exchange for a job.
How do I know a New Zealand employer is really accredited?
Search INZ's accredited employer list by the 13-digit NZBN or by company or trading name; it is updated daily. Some accredited employers have chosen not to appear in the search results, so if a name is missing, ask the employer directly and ask for the NZBN so you can check it.
Does my Gulf work history count as the two years of experience?
INZ asks for 2 years or more of relevant job experience, or a qualification at level 4 or higher on the NZQCF, in the same field as the job. Whether your particular record meets that is a decision for INZ on the evidence you send, so gather payslips, reference letters and certificates that show the same field as the role.
Do I need a New Zealand licence to work as an electrician or plumber?
Yes, for regulated work. Overseas-trained electrical workers must apply to the EWRB for registration in the right class and hold a Limited Certificate before applying for a Practising Licence, and restricted plumbing, gasfitting or drainlaying work without a current New Zealand licence is illegal. Ask the employer how it will support this step before you accept the offer.
Which medical clinic can I use in the Gulf for a New Zealand application?
INZ requires medicals and chest X-rays to be done by a doctor or radiologist on its approved panel physician list, if there is one in your country. INZ names three panel physicians in the UAE and five in Saudi Arabia; for Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain or Jordan, search the INZ list for your country.
Key takeaways
- An AEWV needs an offer from an accredited employer with an approved job check, at least 30 hours a week and at least market-rate pay.
- Check every employer on INZ's accredited list by NZBN or name before you share documents.
- Electrical, plumbing and gas work need a separate New Zealand registration or licence.
- Order Gulf police certificates and medicals late and match each to the right country's list.
- Keep your current job until the offer and approvals are confirmed.
