MEP engineer jobs in Australia from the UAE: assess late and your 482 application may be invalid
Visa guide · 2026-11-04 · 10 min read

MEP engineer jobs in Australia are open to people working in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Riyadh only through a defined route: an employer who sponsors you, a listed occupation that fits your duties, and a skills assessment started before the visa application. "MEP" is the label recruiters use for mechanical, electrical and plumbing design and site work. It is not a box on a visa form, so the first job is to match what you actually do to an occupation on the official list.
Start with the occupation, not the job title
Gulf employers often write one MEP title over very different work: HVAC design, power distribution, fire protection, site supervision, commissioning. Australia's lists work the other way round. The combined list of eligible skilled occupations shows whether an occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL), and it names the skills assessing authority for each one.
Read your last two or three job descriptions, then read the occupation descriptions on the official skilled occupation list. Pick the one that matches your duties, not the one that sounds most senior. An engineer who spent five years supervising electrical installations and an engineer who designed chilled-water systems may land on different occupations and different assessors.
If you have already worked through a related trade, our guide to HVAC technician jobs in Australia from the UAE shows how the same question plays out on the trades side.
What the 482 visa asks of an engineer
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is a temporary visa that lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they cannot fill locally. It has a Core Skills stream, a Specialist Skills stream and a Labour Agreement stream, and our 482 visa guide walks through each.
- Core Skills stream: the occupation must be on the CSOL, and the worker must be paid the Annual Market Salary Rate for the occupation and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. That threshold is AUD79,423 for nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027.
- Specialist Skills stream: the worker must be nominated in an ANZSCO occupation in Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6, and the salary must meet the Specialist Skills Income Threshold.
- Experience: at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time.
The Home Affairs Core Skills page carries the current wording. Ask the assessing authority, not a recruiter, how your own experience will be counted.
The skills assessment: who looks at your degree and your record
Some primary 482 applicants need a mandatory skills assessment. It must be started before the visa application is lodged, or the application is not valid, and it must have been undertaken or commenced within the 3 years before the application. Each assessing authority has its own procedures, timeframes and charges, so confirm yours on the official list before you budget.
For engineering occupations, Engineers Australia publishes its fees. The figures below were checked on the 8th of October 2026 and can change, so confirm them on the assessor's page before paying.
| Item | Amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Engineers Australia standard CDR assessment | $940 excluding GST ($1034 including GST) | Competency Demonstration Report assessment |
| Fast-track add-on | $360 ($396) | Optional extra for the CDR route |
| Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord assessment | $505 excluding GST ($555.50 including GST) | Qualification assessment for accord-recognised degrees |
| New Zealand Accredited Employer Work Visa | from NZD $1540 | Visa cost, for the New Zealand option below |
Trades-style occupations on the MEP side, such as an air-conditioning mechanic, go through Trades Recognition Australia instead. Its Offshore Skills Assessment Program is run with Registered Training Organisations and is compulsory for permanent migration as an Electrician (General), Electrician (Special Class), Plumber (General) or Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic. TRA says the RTO emails the outcome approximately 15 weeks after the complete documentary evidence is submitted. Read the OSAP page before you plan a start date.
A licence is a separate question from a visa
An assessment does not give you the right to carry out regulated work. TRA does not award Australian qualifications, occupational registrations or occupational licences. For electrical work the state regulator decides: NSW does not recognise qualifications from outside Australia for contractor licences, and an overseas-trained electrician can get an Offshore Technical Skills Record through OSAP but must also complete Australian context gap training and supervised employment. Victoria and Queensland also route overseas electricians through TRA and then gap training before the licence.
That matters if your MEP work includes hands-on installation. A design engineer and a licensed electrician are different roles in Australia, and an employer who is sponsoring you will normally know which one the position is. Ask which it is before you accept. Whether a given engineering role needs registration depends on the work and the state, so ask the employer and the state regulator rather than assuming.
Our recent look at what assessors need to see for construction managers covers the evidence side of the same problem.
Paperwork you collect in the Gulf
Three document streams run side by side, and each has its own clock.
- Attested documents. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation service certifies the signatures and seals on documents issued within or outside the UAE, with attestation by MOFA and by the UAE Mission in the destination country. Read which papers need the stamp, and what to do if the degree was issued outside the UAE.
- Police certificates. Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate from every country you lived in, usually if you are over 17 and lived there for at least 12 months in the past 10 years. Certificates for Australian visas are valid for 12 months from the issue date. In the UAE, the Ministry of Interior issues a Criminal Clearance Certificate through its smart app and website, with login by UAE PASS. If you worked in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain or Jordan, Home Affairs' "Services outside Australia" page has a country dropdown that explains how to get a certificate there.
- Health examination. Home Affairs lists four panel physicians in the UAE: Dubai London Clinic - Garhoud Branch (Festival City), NMC Royal Hospital Sharjah, New Medical Center ABD in Abu Dhabi, and Dubai London Hospital and Dubai London Clinic - Speciality Hospital (Beach Road, Dubai). For another country, use the same country dropdown.
The Australian Embassy in the UAE says visa applications can be lodged online via ImmiAccount and points applicants to VFS Global for biometric collection, so nobody needs to travel to a consulate to lodge.
A sequence that saves months
- Match your duties to an occupation on the official list and note its assessing authority.
- Check whether that occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List, and whether the salary on offer meets the income threshold.
- Start the skills assessment with the named authority, since it must begin before the visa application is lodged.
- Request attestation of your degree and employment letters while the assessment runs.
- Apply for police certificates as late as sensible, so the 12-month validity covers lodgement.
- Book the panel physician once the visa application is ready, then lodge through ImmiAccount.
Your CV should lead with the systems you designed or commissioned, the size of the projects and the standards you worked to. A tool such as Build AI CV can help you turn project history into a clean one-page format, but the facts have to be yours.
Common mistakes MEP engineers make
- Applying by title. "Senior MEP engineer" is not an occupation. The assessor looks at duties against a listed occupation.
- Paying for a sponsorship. It is illegal for a person to pay an employer to sponsor them for a visa, including through salary deductions, and doing so can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or imprisonment.
- Assuming a licence follows the assessment. TRA does not award occupational licences, and states set their own rules for electrical and plumbing work.
- Letting a police certificate lapse. A certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date; order it too early and it may expire before you lodge.
- Resigning too soon. Leave your UAE job on a timetable that matches the visa, not before. See how notice periods fit between visa grant and start date.
New Zealand as a second option
New Zealand's Accredited Employer Work Visa costs from NZD $1540 and lets the holder stay up to 5 years depending on the job. The employer must be accredited, so ask for the accreditation before you pay for anything. Our briefing on New Zealand's infrastructure pipeline explains why engineers there are worth watching, and the Immigration New Zealand page has the current rules. Electrical workers also need to register with the Electrical Workers Registration Board before they can apply for a Practising Licence.

Frequently asked questions
Is MEP engineer an occupation on Australia's skilled lists?
MEP is a trade label rather than a single listed occupation. The combined list of eligible skilled occupations names occupations and their assessing authorities, so you match your duties to one of those and check which list it sits on.
Do I need a skills assessment before an employer can sponsor me?
Some primary 482 applicants must have a mandatory skills assessment, by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS depending on the occupation, and it must be started before the visa application is lodged. Check whether yours is one of them on the official list.
Can I apply from Doha or Riyadh instead of Dubai?
Yes, applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount, and police certificates and panel physicians are explained by country on Home Affairs' "Services outside Australia" page. Use that page for the country you live in.
Does an assessment let me work as a licensed electrician?
No. TRA does not award Australian qualifications, occupational registrations or occupational licences. Licensing is handled by the state regulator, which may require gap training and supervised work after an assessment.
What does an Engineers Australia assessment cost?
The standard CDR assessment costs $940 excluding GST ($1034 including GST), and a Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord qualification assessment costs $505 excluding GST ($555.50 including GST). Fees change, so check the current page before you pay.

Key takeaways
- Match your duties to a listed occupation; "MEP" alone is not one.
- Start the skills assessment before the visa application is lodged.
- Never pay anyone to be sponsored: it is illegal.
- A skills assessment is not a licence; check your state regulator.
- Time your police certificate so its 12 months cover lodgement.
